Screen does not detach Screen retracts in the 1 din and does not require extra space Everything is contained in the 1 unit Once u remove the faceplate wc I do when I bring my vehicle for service the unit is non operational and cannot be used nor tampered with Also do not lose the removable faceplate as it is as expensive as the entire unit I inquired about it that’s why I know This is a great unit w great voice activation/ interactive The microphone is sensitive and can hear everything even when windows are open while driving I hope this helps
