• If you start with your phone at half volume, then you can increase the volume at any time by turning up the volume on your phone, thus your phone acts like a remote volume control.

• Yes, in fact the instructions state that the volume on your phone needs to be at least half way up. I found that if the volume on phone is not turned up you don't get any volume out of the speaker. So turn up the phone volume and then adjust the speaker volume to your likings.

• Yes. From what I noticed, the volume levels for the device and your phone are different. It is recommended to have the volume on max on your phone (or whatever audio source you use) and then adjust the volume as desired on the device.
