“It looks like you can just pull the joy con out/up while holding the charge stand based on the instructions, without holding down the black button on the joy con. That seems to work well but I I wanted to make sure that was okay”

I have to push the black release buttons on mine, however it is hard to do with 4 controllers on it unless you have the joy cons on backwards.
