Yes the motion detection is wonderful. Using the ring app it allows you to adjust how far or how close you want it to work.

If you mount your Floodlight Cam on a second story both the motion detector and camera should still pick up movement just as it would if your Floodlight Cam was mounted on the first floor. Keep in mind when mounted 9ft off the ground, with the motion detector parallel to the ground the motion detector range for activating the Floodlight is up to 30ft.
