You described it 2 conductor correctly. There are some wires (e.g. for subwoofer or in-wall wiring) that carry 4 conductors so you only have 1 cable to pull through.

If you look carefully at the wire, you will see small red "+" markings on one half of the split wire set. This is how you can keep track of which wire is which. I use the one with the "+" markings to attach to the red terminals all the time to help me remember to keep the polarity straight and consistent.
