“It looks like from the picture that the swing arm mounting plate is adjustable from side to side so that when bracket is mounted to studs it can be adjusted for example to center over a fireplace mantle. Correct? Thanks”

That's EXACTLY how it works!!! I had to do that with mine. It rotates in ALL directions. You'll love it
