• If I had that problem, I would drill a "test hole" (small) where I wanted to hang the mount and see if I hit the stud. If I did, then i'd go either way 16 " and try for the 2nd one. If not keep drilling until I hit one --you can always patch the drywall with spackle.

• All houses have studs. Otherwise your knotty pine would have nothing to attach to.
