it will stay connected to wifi as long as it has power, it does not send or receive signals during idle mode though just pings the router to make sure it has connection

While I'm not positive that they do, I have an idea they probably do, at least to check for firmware updates on occasion. And if you forget to stop your current stream and shut the TV off they will still play in the background, at least for some time.

Yes it does. It will check daily for new channels you may have added.

There are times I find it accessing the Mother Ship for updates, but mostly it does not use resources when not actively streaming shows.

If it's always on (using charger or always-on TV port), then yes, but it's minimal (control/command bursts like most connected devices). Shouldn't be of any concern even if you are on a metered connection. If you use a TV USB port that isn't always on, then the stick will be completely turned off when the TV isn't turned on.

This item does not use Wifi when not in use.
