My USB Seagate 2tb self powered drive with NTFS format works fine. However, a larger drive may require separate power. Several searches on web gave mixed reviews on this subject so I went with a 2tb drive.

If the external hard drive you're using is not self powered, the Roku Ultra may not have enough power being output through the usb 3.0 port to power your external hard drive. The Roku Ultra (2020) outputs 1170mA via the usb 3.0 port on the device. You will also want to make sure your external hard drive is formatted to one of the following file system types; FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, EXT2, EXT3, and HFS+ file systems. Last thing is to make sure your media is also in a supported file format. For additional information on the media file types that are supported take a look at the guide linked here - https://support.roku.com/article/208754908
