“Is this a powered mic that will work with the Canon Vixia HFR40?”

• It is a powered mic. The receiver has an internal rechargeable battery and the mic pack runs off two AA batteries. I use it on Canon 80D.

• If your camera has an audio input, it is highly likely that the Go Mic Mobile will work on it. I use my phone. It's super convenient.

• For your use it should be considered a powered microphone as the receiver outputs an amplified signal and does not require phantom power. As far as it working with that camera depends on if that camera has an external mic input jack, if so then likely yes barring any impedance mismatch etc.
