Hi tamacat, Thanks for reaching out and we hope you are in good health. We appreciate your interest in Samsung home appliances, specifically the Samsung - 1.9 Cu. Ft. Over-the-Range Microwave with Sensor Cook - Stainless steel. Local codes and the practical use of the range will likely require you to provide more than the 13.5 inches from the stove surface and the bottom of the microwave. I have included below the installation guide link. Please click on the link and turn to page 7 for more information on the mounting space. https://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/EM/202202/20220223181959631/ME4000R_ME19R7041FS_AA_DE68-04585A-02_EN_220120.pdf Please feel free to communicate with us through the channels below if you have additional questions. 1. Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. This really depends upon the installation. If the range is a gas stove, one might be more concerned. Except for that, a guiding factor will probably be the accessibility of the rear 'burners' if the distance is too low. I would guess that one would normally be aware if the range was heating up the unit enough to cause damage. Obviously, excess moisture from cooking on the range should be a concern. Simply use front burners to address the issues.
