The refrigerator is delivered without the handles on, so you do not have to install them. Under each of the top doors is an indentation that allows for you to put your fingers there and open it up. The freezer you can open easily by rolling it out, holding each side. We have not installed the handles on ours and we are perfectly happy without them. I do want to check if there a filler pieces for where the handles are supposed to go.
