• It's the easiest and supposedly the best way to connect. I haven't compared sound quality using an HDMI cable vs optical cable, but we're very happy with the sound quality. Any (i.e., cheap) HDMI cable will do.

• I have used both, I originally hooked it up using the HDMI cable and it worked fine, one day that connection stopped working for reasons I could not figure out so I connected using the optical cable and the sound bar works the same.
