Hi Lee. Leaving the water filter inside the unit while away won't affect the unit performance at all. However, I'd recommend turning the ice maker off because the ice tray can overflow. For instructions on how to turn the ice maker off, click here (https://bit.ly/2M6fCSB). ^Gaby
