The ice maker looks like attached to the ceiling of the freezer so probably it cannot be removed unless you break the plastic. I also do not have water line going to the refrigerator and I use ice tray to make ice. The ice maker is pretty small and does not take too much space of the freezer. SInce it's attached to the top you can still use the full space of the bottom.
