I play mostly mkvs, but also avi and mp4 on a regular USB jump drive or even with a WD Passport. It has played everything I have thrown at it. All my USB drives are at least 2.0 and I use a short USB extension cord so I hook up my drives to that rather than wear out the USB slot on the TV. This TV will also accept a Logitech unified receiver in a USB slot so you can use a wireless mouse and keyboard with it.
