A:AnswerLCD refers to the type of screen that makes the picture. An LCD screen does not produce light - think of it as a film negative, only not negative. You need to project light through it to see the picture. LED is the type of light source. Older LCD TV's used CRT bulbs which would burn out eventually and also use more power than LED's. The TV manufactures only talk about the LED aspect whereas they are still LCD TV's. So, LCD compared to LED is not apples to apples. And no one really makes LCD TV's with CRT lights any more but marketing as an LED TV makes it seem like it is a whole new technology.
Also the use of LED as a back light source provides additional benefits over CRT bulbs such as local dimming but that is beyond the scope of your question.
Other TV technologies use screens that do produce their own light and don't need a bulb behind them such as plasma TV's but no one makes them anymore - too expensive.
