Hi Eileen! This model has a "Self Clean" cycle that we recommend running about every 20 washes. The self clean cycle helps to remove dirt and bacteria from the drum. This improves the overall cleaning performance, and helps to prevent the spread of germs and bacteria. ^Jecca
