We purchased the black finish stove because we don't care for the fingerprint problems with bare stainless and the top surface is a single black enameled unit with lowered areas around each burner to catch some boil-overflows, but not excessively so. The top does have cutouts for the gas burner bases which protrude slightly above it (and they are not easily removable for cleaning, as the upper burner components are) but the lower bases can become filled with material if too much spills over. The top is flush with the burner bases and it does not have gaps that anything could fall below the top requiring it to be removed (which would prove difficult if necessary because of the screws around each burner base.) The photo shows what the left front burner base looks like without the gas cover, the top plate or the upper grille in place. They vary in size but all have a cup that can retain a small quantity of liquid that spills over but could clog the gas opening at the bottom if it is excessive.
