Definitely not! Bluray and DVD should work on 4k tvs. It's just makes more sense for people who have 4k movies to get a 4k player and 4k tv to maximize the 4k experience. You should be good! You might be able to save money and skip the 4k tv if it's not your goal to get a complete 4k experience, honestly but I don't know what your goal is. As long as your dvd/Bluray player connects through HDMI you're good to watch non 4k movies.
