You give them your old device when you pick up your new phone. So you keep your existing device until then.

You get an envelope and must return within 14 days or your account will be billed. That is how Verizon handled last upgrade with Best Buy

You keep the old phone until you pickup the new one. At that point, they give you an envelope that you have 14 days to mail your old phone back to your carrier (Verizon, ATT, etc).

You will trade in your phone when you pick up your pre-order. You can place your pre-order and still keep your old phone. You're only required to trade it in once you pick up the new one.
