“How much heat does this give off? i'm probably being paranoid, but I've lost two devices to excessive heat. I currently use a cooling pad for my laptop, but that would not be practical for this.”

I use mine everyday and can't say I ever noticed any heat coming from it. I have been using it since these came out.

I haven't noticed any excessive heat; a little warm maybe, but nothing that should prevent you from purchasing this.
