The LTE version is a stand alone version with cellular service that requires a service plan. The bluetooth version will require your phone nearby to make phone calls.

It will at least need to be on wifi, although i'm not sure if that will allow you to receive texts and calls, maybe yes, maybe no. I just wanted to point out this is not the LTE version. The LTE version is releasing a little later and will be a bit more expensive and will require you to add it to your mobile plan. Not all carriers have plans for wearable tech.
