“Is it possible to fold the keyboard underneath and still use the touch screen keyboard ? Or, do you only use the separate keyboard once you've got it attached to the tablet ?”

Absolutely. I have this setup, and just verified it. If you fold the keyboard back, when you touch the screen with your finger or stylus, the on-screeen/touchscreen keyboard pops up automatically. The keyboard receives it's power from the tablet itself, so the case-keyboard is only active while docked with a physical connection.
