“Are you supposed to get notifications on your phone when sounds or motion is detected? It only shows this in the app for me and I can't find a setting that would allow notifications to come through to phone.”

You will get notifications if you have set them up in the app and turned them on in the device. You can get notifications for motion or sound detect.
