“I couldn't figure out the installation thing that was on the disk when I plugged it in the first time, but it appeared I could just copy/paste my files over. I clicked on it & my laptop (HP w/Windows) wouldn't do anything. Do I need to install something?”

Im not sure if you have to but try to install the app on your computer. Once installed, it will prompt you to add a password to protect your drive but you dont have to have a password. Maybe you need the app to kick start the thing. I didnt try connecting it without installing the device. Maybe you need the app. If not, maybe a bad drive.
