“Is this shallow enough to fit in the wall above a fireplace? Meaning, is there enough space behind the box to run the wires/cords down inside the wall, or does it take up the entire space inside the wall?”

This kit is designed to be installed in a standard 2x4 framed wall (3 1/2" deep plus drywall depth). Assuming your walls are standard depth, you should be able to install it and run cords inside the wall just fine.
