“Do I have to be connected to the internet in order to transfer the games over to the Xbox series S? I’m asking in case we lose the internet service… I don’t want to have the games and not be able to transfer them if I lose internet access.”

No, as long as it was downloaded to the system previously it will transfer to the device. The only issue would be the size of the game and the transfer time. And you wont be able to play during the transfer.

Please try again later.I was having issues transferring to the Xbox X , but I then attached the external drive to my Xbox One and had no issues then online to transfer my Xbox Live account games to the drive which I had formatted to use on more than one Xbox console, so far for online gaming on/off the internet i have had no issues playing games, you should get MS Xbox Live warning updates when loading games the first time playing older games you own when installing. The games should work fine.
