You can only store Series S/X optimized games, you cannot load them, however if you have the xbox one version, 360, or OG xbox games downloaded to it you can load them directly. Any optimized or "next gen" games have to be on the internal storage or the Seagate expansion card to load, but moving stuff back and forth isnt that big of a deal and its a lot faster than having to redownload a game again, just move it to the external drive and move it back when you want to play again
