There's a pair of external fine mesh screen filters, one on each side, that slide easily up and out. You can brush them off, just like you would a lint trap on a dryer, and slide them back in. I feel like the "check filter" message comes up every few months or so to let me know the unit's detecting lower airflow. It's not onerous to take care of. The HEPA filter inside can't be cleaned, but it does last for a few years. They promise five; I got three out of mine in a fairly dusty home.

To clean them, slide the mesh filters upward to remove them, then use a vacuum with a soft brush or a cloth to clear dust. If needed, you can rinse them with room‑temperature water, just make sure they air‑dry completely for 12 hours before reinstalling to avoid damaging the HEPA filter. Once dry, slide them back into place.
