The Keypad has a proximity sensor, so it lights up when it thinks there's a person approaching. It does work by infrared - so it might trigger if warm objects are nearby, even if it's not a person. You can try disabling the Battery Saver feature in the Keypad's settings, so it lights up only when you press a button (or if there's a triggered event).
