• The lock, on the inner door, fits/connects over the deadbolt you had already. There are batteries in both outer and inner door parts, but if the batteries fail you use your key to unlock the deadbolt on the door. The outer part, keypad, is placed above the deadbolt, but not on the deadbolt, on the outer door. I hope this helps.
