Does anyone know about this and do you need special cables, etc? Any issues with streaming from Direct Tv in US to Germany? What kind of DVR would anyone recommend?”

Yes. It works with anything you can hook up to. Remote control send signal to home boxes.

All the cables are included in the box that is needed to connect. You can access your Slingbox anywhere in the world (including Germany) as long as you have a internet connection. The Slingbox only mirrors your TV so you have to use your DVR that is provided to you by Direct TV.
