It could be many issues. Need to know if router at home is working. Attempt to log into the router if you know the address or someone can do this for you at your house. If that works the check your Ethernet ports to make sure they are working or if WiFi then you will need someone at home to see if they use WiFi then it should be working. I use mine as direct connect Ethernet as it is best. If that all works but still cannot get it to work then someone will have unplug and wait 30 Seconds and plug back in. If it's not working as to the ability to connect to the box then you may have a bad box. The only issues that I have had with my 500 is I just have RGB cables as there is so few content that I can watch via HDMI. This is the Securty Protection HDCP issue that RGB does not have.
