You can set it up in the Alexa app - but if you want to temporarily disable go into the Alexa app and mark it as disabled.

I'm new to this system, and learning as I go. I have my Sono's System set up on my smart phone, through my Alexa Dot, and that is so handy to stream music, via voice command, when we want continuous music. I don't know of any other way to turn off Alexa, except through the Alexa App on the smart phone or I-pad. Something else for to look into.
