Hi GrandmaK, Thank you for your question. The phone will charge while connected to the radio. The radio offers up to a 1.5A charge rate on the USB connection and should be enough to at least keep the phone battery level, if not add a bit of charge, depending on what resources are running on the phone itself. Turning off the screen of the phone while connected will improve the charge rate, since the screen of the phone is the largest user of power in most cases. I hope this helps!
