Hi there, Thank you for your question. Yes, the TV can play HD material. It upscales to near 4k quality and looks great! There are several ways to adjust the motion to taste so it looks clean and clear. As for dead pixels: SCREEN (For LCD TV only): Although the LCD screen is made with high-precision technology and has effective pixels of 99.99% or more, black dots or bright points of light (red, blue, or green) may appear constantly on the LCD screen. This is a structural property of the LCD panel and is not a malfunction. See a vivid, crisp picture while you watch and game, all enhanced by Full Array LED and powered by the intelligent Cognitive Processor XR™️. Sound positioning tweeters, in additional to the TV speakers, elevates the sound so what you hear matches the picture you see. Take entertainment further by pairing your BRAVIA XR™️ TV with Sony audio equipment. You’ll discover an unmatched audio-visual experience with outstanding XR picture and sound quality. -Ralph

I have noticed that the picture can be blurry if it's upconverting 480p but even upconverted 720p looks good on the Sony X90L. I'm coming from a 10 year old Samsung. I do watch OTA broadcast with mine as well as some streaming from Youtube TV, Max and Prime. Keep in mind that many of these services only send 1080P signals unless you upgrade your subscription to get 4K. This also has ATSC 3.0 tuners for OTA which means it 'could' receive 4K broadcasts but none of the TV stations in my area are broadcasting in 4K right now. Tuning to a digital ATSC 3.0 station is a bit slow too, taking 2-3 seconds to get a picture. ATSC 1.0 station tune in quicker. I've only had this about 2 weeks now but I do not see any dead pixels on mine. I have the 65" model. I will say that I do notice motion issues on occasion. These are typically judder problems but they seem to be pretty rare. Probably not bad enough that I want to return it. Overall I'm pretty impressed with this TV.
