• The unit will connect wireless to your wifi. They give the port in case you do not have wifi and want it to be a wired connection.

• Hi Jeff, No, using the Ethernet port is optional for a wired connection. This player has a built-in Wi-Fi for a wireless connection. You may refer to page 17 of the link below for more information: https://docs.sony.com/release//Manual_4579663131.pdf ~Ralph
