• Yes. It only has a pre-amp therefore it needs an amplifier.

• I have mine connected to the receiver/amp of an audio system, but if you go to the Q&As on Best Buy's product page for this turntable and scroll to "What else do I need to buy to play music?", there are at least a few other possibilities.
