“Would this model turntable benefit from a separate pre amp and if so what model would you recommend? Recording: Auto find track function starts toward the end of a track rather than at start of the next track on normal record with quiet between tracks.”

This turntable has a built in pre amp to use with accessory line in functions or you can switch the pre amp off to use with phono line in functions The switch is located on the back of the turntable. Make sure you have the pre amp switch turned on for use with accessory line in functions. I have not used the built in turntable pre amp as I have it run into the phono line in my receiver. The turntable sounds great and is working as anticipated in this configuration.
