“I just bought a Sony WH-CH700N for my wife. The box has not been opened. Does it come with its own carrying case or is that a separate purchase?”

I picked these up Thanksgiving night, sealed. No, they do not come with a carrying case. Inside the box are the headphones, 2 cables and fold out instructions (which also can be downloaded via the Sony website) . Cables: A USB charging cable and a 3.5mm headphone cable/jack if you wish to use it as wired headphones.

No case, but they are really nice headphones with great sound and very comfortable!
