No. The magnet will turn it on or off but has a hasp type closure that is very secure.

No, the case stays closed due to a snap-on system. I'd compare this lock system to a snap-on button that is used for sewing buttons on leather jackets or jean jackets. Instead of it being metal, it is made of plastic. There is some elasticity to it which is good if you have papers in-between the case and the iPad. I hope I was able to explain this to you.
