No, you don't need to download any app to use any of the TV's functions. Roku is built in and you can use all of the smart features through your remote. You will however need to download the Roku app to access some more in depth settings. On a plus side, the Roku app allows you to use your tablet or phone as a remote. You can't use it to turn on the TV but you can use it for everything else including turning off the TV.

You can use the features of the TV and access settings with the remote that comes with the TV.
