Reception is better if it is by a window or in an area that the signal is stronger. Metal buildings tend to block signals, depending on the way they are insulated and thickness of the walls and type of metal they are made of. My opinion is if you are going to be using this product mount it outside it the direction of the stronger signal. You can place it in different areas and set your tv for scan and see where you get the best channels. Also make sure that rain and wind are blocked.
