Setup instructions say to remove back-up battery from modem first, but nothing about when to replace. Since the battery is needed to back up phone service, when do you replace the battery? After everything is set up, or sometime before? null

In most scenarios, the battery and power to the modem should be replaced once the modem has been connected to the router via Ethernet cable.

When installing new router, did not remove battery from modem. All ended a-ok

Thank you to Chris, who shared that it was not necessary to remove the back-up battery from the modem during set up of this router.
I didn't remove the battery either (since I typically prefer shortcuts and didn't want to mess with the battery at all) and can report all is also well, and the wifi is working perfectly.
