“Question If the two surround speakers are disconnected and this is left as a 3.1, would this still work? Any settings to configure it as a 3.1? Just concerned performance may drop if the system is expecting to use the satellite speakers.”

You can select the mode in setting for type of setup you have. Just turn off the surround mode and it should work but you will be missing out on virtual x which give you and effect of sound floating in a bubble like space above you tho it won’t be as apparent as actual upward facing speakers.
