• It may not be your remote.You probably purchased a bad television.

• Hello Margo, Is there anything blocking your'e TV sensor? Would suggest a couple steps to start off with-Remove the batteries from the Vizio remote control and press reach button to make sure no buttons sticking, Then unplug the TV from the power and hold the physical button on the TV down for at least 5 seconds. Then tried the remote control again.
