Yes, when casting the content to your display the limitations of your cell phone won't prevent it from reaching higher resolutions. Do keep in mind things like your internet performance and the content you're watching can have an impact. But assuming you're watching 4k content and your internet throughput is sufficient to stream 4k, you would be able to view it in 4k on your display even if your smart phone has a lower resolution screen.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I had similar Dilema. Apple TV , iPhone all produce currently 1080p. Hopefully they will get on the wagon with IPhone 8. But what I did is got another streaming box Roku at Costco $94 bucks. They produce 2160p for Netflix, Amazon Prime and others. Cannot view Apple purchased items , yet.
