Simplified answer. Picture a cameraman in front of the actors. There are 5 microphones recording the sound. One microphone is right in front of the actors. One microphone is to the right side of the actors and one to their left. Behind the cameraman there are also two microphones one on each side of them. With those five channels, you are hearing what the cameraman is hearing. Vocals coming from the center and all of the other sounds coming from the other places around the cameraman. When you play the recording you are sitting where the cameraman was and hear it like they heard it from all around them. The subwoofer produces the low frequencies or, if you like, the bass sounds. Since humans generally can't pinpoint where those low rumbling sounds are coming from, the subwoofer can be placed most anywhere in the room to give that bone shaking sensation. A place that bounces those deep sounds off of a wall works best. Hope this helps.
