Yes, you can use just the photo buttons. We don't use the cordless for mom for the same reason.

The place for pictures isn’t very big but I don’t have the measurements for you at this time. I took hot pink stickies, cut to size, and wrote the name with black marker for each person. There is space for 8 people. It’s working great.
